pumpkin update

So I didn't win the competition- I wasn't surprised, A Beautiful Mess is a very, very popular blog and I knew there would be a ton of entries, so to be honest i was just surprised to be one of the runners up- look, here i am!!

Looks like i'm going to have to win a kitchen-aid on another competition!

I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers...

I love October. I love Autumn. I love pumpkins. One thing I don't love is Halloween because I just hate scary things. But most of the blogs that I follow are American and halloween is a b.i.g. d.e.a.l over there! I so wanted to be part of the seasonal fun without all the sinister stuff so I took part in this competition to carve a pumpkin.

Here is my carved pumpkin! I have never ever carved one before because it was too halloween-y but I just LOVE pumpkins as decorations- why shouldn't I use one as a lantern?! And I carved this quote from Anne of Green Gables on it (you couldn't get further away from halloween than Anne of GG could you?!).

And here is a picture of what the words actually look like because the thing with a pumpkin is that you can't see all the way round in one picture can you? Also, I need a new camera. I really struggled to take pictures in the dark, they all came out really grainy. Although it might be me, rather than the camera.

Anyway, happy autumn!

a very exciting day in our house!

So i have been away from blogging and selling in my shop recently because of this! It's one of the books that I've been illustrating for 10ofthose and it arrived in the warehouse today! I am super duper excited because although I've illustrated a few things, this is the first BOOK that I have done that's been published and boy I really do love it!

It's so strange seeing the things I've been staring at on my computer screen for months actually physically in print!!!So here it is, The Mystery of the Missing Spots, it's about Naaman from the Bible. We've got a few of these 'mystery' books on the go, and I can't wait to share them all with you! You can buy it here and it's only £3.99! Bargain!

Thank you Curtains!

When we moved into our house nearly 2 years ago, we bought plain white curtains for each room. Each pair was at least 30cm too long, so when my mum came round we decided to hem them.

We were left with quite a lot of white material, and it was all pretty dirty as it had been trailing along the floor for a few months.
I'm ashamed to say that I very lazily said that I would just throw it all away, as it needed washing and to be honest we are ALWAYS behind on our washing and I just didn't want to add to the pile.

But my mum, who never ever throws anything away, said that she'd wash and dry it all for me (isn't that kind of her?!), and I said that even so I would probably NEVER use it.

How wrong I was!

It has become a staple in my sewing projects, I've used it in so many things I've lost count, but I want to show you some of the projects I've used it for...

These are some trousers I made for Bella over a year ago- the thin white fabric made for some perfect breezy, cool bloomers!

Look how little Bella is here! And I just loved the fancy edges on the trousers, I'm quite sad that she has outgrown them now! (and the curtains in the picture are BEFORE we hemmed them!)

And then a few weeks ago I decided to make some placemats for our kitchen table. I got the pattern from this beautiful book...

I guess the trouble with white placemats is that they are HIGHLY impractical. As I placed them on the table I sternly told Nick that we must be VERY CAREFUL to not spill anything on them. It's a real shame that we're such messy eaters-they are now dotted with stains. BUT I am trying to be laid back about it, it's good to not be precious about stuff, right?!

And then finally I made this doll for Bella. This is her with 2 different looks; 'going-out' and 'casual'!

I've been trying to work out a nice pattern for a ragdoll for a few months now. I drew this one out, not sure how it would look once it was sewn and stuffed-you never can tell! But I'm actually really happy with how she's turned out! Her hair took an AGE to finish. I would have added more but it is actually SO THICK and unmanageable now, there just wouldn't be any room! But we all have thick, unmanageable hair in our family so she fits in extremely well!

We're not sure what to call her yet. Bella wanted to call her Tia Mouse Pig Doll but I thought that was a mouthful, so I'm just waiting for Bella to choose a new and hopefully shorter name for her!!

So thank you Mum, for making me keep these curtain trimmings, and thank you Curtains, for being so useful!

It's someone's birthday on Saturday.

My little Bella Primrose is all grown up and turning 2, and I know it's what everyone says but it really has gone fast!

I thought I'd freshen up her bedroom a little, I made some sweet little flowers to put on her wall:

I made a rather smug looking little rabbit because we now have a pet rabbit called Posie and Bella is obsessed with rabbits!

Last year around Bella's first birthday I made a print called 'Bella likes...' with all the stuff she liked doing on it. The plan is to update this every year and this is her new one!

'Poudu' is what she calls Posie and we love it so much, she makes it sound so french!!

Here she is, my little beauty, almost two. Sigh, I just love her!!

shiny and new

So I've given the blog a bit of a makeover.

For about a year at least I've not really felt like i knew how to make the blog my own but after having a proper go at tweaking bits here and there i have finally created a blog that feels like me! To be honest it's all been a bit of a headache and I even started a new blog somewhere else because I thought it might be easier to customise with a whole different blog company but it niggled me to abandon my little blog here so I decided to knuckle down and I think I finally understand lots of the different things I can do with it to make it my own!

And my aim is to change the header (the thing at the top) as and when I feel like it because I get bored very quickly! This rabbit at the top is a little nod to Easter. Now I know Easter isn't all about rabbits but I didn't really want to draw Jesus!

One day, one day, I will regularly update this blog and work really hard at getting it off the ground. But for now, this will do. But thank you, you faithful few who actually read this and stick with it, it means a lot!

DIY: little book tutorial

Today was rainy and grey and me and Bella needed something to amuse us. So we made little books to draw and colour in and i thought that maybe some of you would like to do the same so here is a tutorial in 10 easy steps that i have made for your DIY pleasure!

It really is great, kids just love small things and you can make a whole set of them...

a happy accident

A lovely lady from church gave me a bag of fabric that she wouldn't use anymore, and one piece of fabric in particular caught my eye, this beautiful red-purple stuff that I *think* is Liberty fabric, although I could be wrong!

So i made this dress, lined it with one of Nick's old shirts and sewed on one of the shirt pockets as a pocket...

So that was all fine but then I was chatting to my sister on Sunday and she said she'd seen some nice reversible pinafores in London and I thought 'hmmm I wonder if this dress is reversible too...'

and ta daaaaaaa, it totally is!!!

The way I'd sewn the lining happened to be suitable for turning inside out so I of course could not leave it at that so have just sewn on a little cat pocket and some buttons at the top and hey presto!!!

And Bella loves it, she thinks the cat is real, this is her stroking it!

i want you to meet some friends of mine...

I used to draw all the time, i would constantly be doodling little characters and make little stories for them, but since i went to uni, and then had Bella, i was just a little bit too SERIOUS to be doodling such silly things. But the other night i found myself with a pen and paper and drew some little people-i just LOVED it, i couldn't stop! i have lots of sweet little characters just WAITING to be shown off!

I've only had time to do 2 of them properly but HERE THEY ARE on some little cards all of their own!

This is Clara, look, she has a heart on a piece of paper and all she wants to do is give it to someone and make their day!

And this is Nora! She is holding a bright balloon and she is totally ready to do some celebrating!

ahhh look at them!! they just REALLY want to be bought and given to someone special!

Please do buy some from my shop, go on, you know you want to!

Reckless Necklace(s)

ok so they're not actually RECKLESS but what else rhymes with necklace?

i've been busy making some for the shop...

They are so much fun to make and totally customisable.

Please do let me know if there is something you fancy being embroidered onto a pendant just for you or a friend, i do initials or words or pictures-whatever you want!

And if no-one buys them, it does not matter one jot because i love wearing them!

back to normal...

what a lovely Christmas we have had! It's pretty much back to normal now though, which is actually quite exciting because i must design some new things for the shop! Since Christmas finished i have thought of lots of lovely Christmas decorations to make and sell which is a bit annoying-i have a whole year to wait before i can try them out!! If anyone has any ideas of what i could make for now-i'm listening!

yesterday i fancied making some stuff for bella not the shop though.

First things first, a new headband-

Secondly, a teeny weeny rucksack!!

here they are in action- hence the blurriness!

and the little monkey insisted on wearing them both for breakfast!!
